Bespoke Ceiling Lightboxes for The Gilbert and One Lackington

Bespoke Ceiling Lightboxes for The Gilbert and One Lackington

In 2021, award-winning architectural practice, Stiff & Trevillion, undertook an ambitious project to refurbish and extend a 200,000 ft², 10-storey site in the heart of London. Taking up prime real estate in Finsbury, The Gilbert & One Lackington (City Gate House) would provide premium office facilities for the businesses that represent the future of global commerce.

When seeking to cultivate an interior aesthetic that matched the building’s iconic exterior façade, its design teams approached Unibox for support in the development of a bespoke LED lighting system that would serve as the primary light source for the lettable space inside.

Design & Development

Upon receiving concept drawings from Stiff & Trevillion, our product development team began working to create a bespoke solution. To complement the brass finishes and crisp, geometric lines specified for the building’s interior design scheme, we engineered a series of LED lightboxes that would perform exactly as our client imagined.

To achieve the Lux levels and colour temperatures specified, we also tested a range of different LEDs and diffusers before choosing the most suitable ones for the application in question. Our teams produced a full-size prototype of the proposed solution to ensure that our client felt utterly confident that it would be capable of delivering the light levels, functionality and aesthetic appeal they envisioned.

Manufacture & Installation

We used our Ledge 100 aluminium frames with specially-developed t-profiles to engineer a series of LED lightboxes. Each ceiling-mounted lightbox measures 3500mm x 3500mm and uses 3000K LEDs to provide a colour temperature that complements the warm tones and intimate atmosphere of the interior’s material finishes.

To uphold our client’s environmental and legal responsibilities, we advised using DXNR diffusers – a type of fire-retardant polycarbonate that allows for ultra-efficient light transmission. Additionally, to ensure the solution we provided met the functional requirements of commercial interiors, we included dimmable LEDs, integrated emergency lighting and access hatches to allow for routine maintenance of the M&E systems.

Now fully installed, these LED lightboxes sit proudly within The Gilbert & One Lackington development and serve to enhance its premium, ultra-functional interior. The development is shortlisted in the 2022 British Council for Offices (BCO) Awards for the calibre of its design, its sustainability credentials and its impressive range of facilities. When reflecting on her experience of working with Unibox on this project, Stiff & Trevillion’s Director, Emily Walker, said:

“The lightboxes are absolutely fantastic and the reception has been described as a ‘knock-out’ space. The client is thrilled with the result, as are we, and the response from the agents so far has been brilliant since the building launched last month. Your team has been excellent throughout and we would not hesitate to work with you again in the future – please pass on my thanks to your design team, and especially to the fabricators and installers as well.”
